Obstacles To Wellness Nutrition

 

Wellness nutrition is important for every age group, but studies show that as people age, there are additional challenges to eating well. Incomplete nutrition exacerbates some common conditions for older individuals and can cause other issues. Eating well throughout every age group promotes health and longer life spans.

Aging, in and of itself, does not cause poor nutrition, but there are situations that often develop as one ages that contributes to nutrition issues. One of the circumstances that contributes to poor nutrition in some individuals is the death of a spouse or partner. Older individuals who suddenly find themselves living alone may stop making good meals and begin eating quick meals that don't provide good nutrition.

 

Another issue for some older individuals is medical conditions that make it difficult to chew, swallow, or digest some foods. This may limit the foods the individuals can eat or make them choose foods that aren't as good nutritionally. Not surprisingly, people will often choose foods that are easy to eat or that don't cause problems.

Studies also show that income levels affect the choices that people make when shopping for food. Individuals on limited budgets are less likely to buy perishable food items like fresh fruits, vegetables and meat, because these items spoil quickly. Over ten percent of individuals over 65 live in poverty and they may choose cheap food in order to have money for housing and other needs.

These are just a few of the obstacles that older individuals face when seeking wellness nutrition. Thankfully, family and friends can help mitigate these situations and provide the elderly with good nutrition, helping to keep them healthy. Wellness nutrition can happen at any age if people are dedicated to it.

First, family and friends can check in with elderly individuals to make sure that they are eating properly. If there are problems with chewing or digestion, take the individual to see a medical professional for treatment. In some cases, the condition may be cured or alleviated.

If the individual is on a special diet, consider making some meals for them and putting them in single servings in the freezer. The individual can simply thaw the serving out and have a nutritious meal whenever they want. If possible, you could also buy groceries for the elderly person occasionally to supplement what they are able to buy themselves.

You can also find government or community programs like Meals on Wheels or free lunches that the person can participate in. Most of the programs do not have income requirements and they will also provide the person with a social outlet. Some of the programs will customize meals for individuals on special diets as well.

Wellness nutrition for older persons can be possible, even though some obstacles can arise. Learning about what these obstacles are and how to prevent them from making good nutrition impossible should be a concern for everyone who knows an elderly person. With preparation and care, good nutrition can happen.
